Woman: Jack?
Man: Oh hi, Mary! How are you? Enjoying your voluntary job? You are working for a large building firm as a volunteer, aren’t you?
Woman: Yes, I started after I graduated this June. It’s fantastic.
Man: Wow, that’s good to know. I remember you majored in architectural design in college, you must have lots of opportunities to put it into practice.
1Woman: Well actually I am working as a receptionist right now. I want to improve my interpersonal skills as I need to work with different personalities.
Man: I’m sure this will be of great help. But you must be busy all the time, I imagine there are quite a lot of customers all day long as it’s a big company.
2Woman: Not really, I don’t work full time, usually the work lasts for 4 hours in the morning. Then someone will be on the afternoon shift. Also, I only need to be there on weekdays, so it’s okay.
Man: So what exactly do you do? I guess you have to answer the phone, arrange appointments, and deal with people when they have complaints?
3Woman: Yeah, those can be part of my work, but I mainly respond to the emails from our clients.
Man: Have you participated in any training courses yet? I remember last time you once joined a training club as a volunteer.
4Woman: Yes, of course, I thought I would receive some communication courses from this job, you know, to get some basic interpersonal communication skills. But there are only computer classes available, it’s kind of vocational education.
Man: Is that free or do you have to pay for that?
5Woman: It’s not free, but we’ve got some subsidies from a bank which has gone into partnership with this building company.
Man: That’s not bad. I wish I could get some funding from somewhere...our project is so expensive.
6Woman: I heard that you are working on an Urban River Project, is that right?
Man: Yes, my former employer recommended it to me, it’s a big project, the largest irrigation project so far in this city.
Woman: Wow, that’s amazing, I never knew you are interested in water conservancy.
It must be quite challenging.
7Man: Yeah, actually I was planning to work in the field related to education, you know, I have always wanted to be a math teacher, but I decided to try something different in my life before I become a teacher.
Woman: Of course, you will have some special experience. What does this job require you to do? Things like doing some complicated calculations?
8Man: Right, and before we go into any of that, we need to attend a workshop beforehand, that involves group discussion in which we share our knowledge and experience together.
Woman: Sounds interesting, I bet you can get a lot from those discussions with all the experts there...
Man: Sure, I really have learned a lot, it’s quite rewarding.
Woman: Oh right, you remember my cousin, Simon?
Man: Of course, we took part in an international research project last summer and we cooperated well. He is excellent to work with.
Woman: Yeah, you know he is a construction project major and he just got his Postgraduate Diploma, now he is looking for some similar project like yours, I wonder if you can introduce him.....
9Man: Well, it’s quite easy for him to join us, my colleagues and I all apply online for this voluntary work. All he needs to do is to fill in some basic information and click on the Go button to finish the application.
Woman: I see, could you send me the project link later?
Man: No problem. Oh, I almost forgot, he will also need a formal recommendation.
10All volunteers are required to have a reference to vouch for them.
Woman: Okay, I will inform him of that. Thank you.
